@johoelzl We now produce a better message for your example:

   inductive R : ℕ → Prop
   | pos : ∀p n, R (p + n)

   lemma R_id : ∀n, R n → R n
   | (.p + .n) (R.pos p n) := R.pos p n

The new error is:
